BBGS renovates sustainably: New location for the veterinary clinic of USAG Benelux

On the US Air Base of USAG Benelux in Chièvres, Belgium, BBGS has created a new location for the resident veterinary clinic: For this purpose, the experienced team extended and renovated an existing single-story building with a GFA of 2,138 m² from the mid-20th century, which was previously used as an office building. The project site is located on the grounds of the military installation in the immediate vicinity of the small town of Chièvres. The renovated building includes examination, treatment, administrative, public and support facilities. Although the renovation was safely completed several years ago, the project recently received a crowning achievement: LEED certification for the building.

Sustainable renovation with LEED certification

LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a voluntary certification program that aims to reinforce and promote high performance in sustainable buildings. LEED certification is a demanding process that impacts nearly all areas of turnkey construction. For projects built outside the United States, such as the veterinary clinic, the certification process is particularly challenging due to the complex circumstances involved; Just perfect for the strong, dedicated and experienced team at BBGS. Our experts followed the lengthy certification process steps determinedly and conscientiously, created, updated and managed LEED-related documents and were in constant, close coordination with the USAG team. As a result of their efforts, Silver certification was achieved. The calculated sustainability highlights of the project are that the renovation will save approximately 34% water and nearly 63% of the modelled energy use for building heating and lighting.

The building conversion for the new veterinary clinic contributes to the well-being of the users and makes a valuable contribution to climate protection through its sustainability highlights.
