Monument-protected building as the main command of the US Air Force.

This Design / Build project was under Contract FA5682-10-C-0009 issued by the 31 Sq. US Air Force in 2010. The general scope of this project was the complete renovation of a four story protected Historical Building in Aviano Air Base, Italy (Bldg. 1467) in order to convert it from a Italian military facility into the new command center of the US Air Force in Aviano.

BBGS performed the complete design, starting from a concept design by the Government’s A&E to the 100% design. The biggest technical challenge in both the design and construction was the complete demolition repouring of the concrete slab to allow the perimeter walls to be reinforced.

The building contained a cafeteria and dining area along with government offices, which had to remain operational. The construction activities included demolition and reconstruction of slabs and walls, removal and installation of both flat and sloped roofs (incl. waterproofing membranes, roof tiles, flashing, and roof insulation). All of the interior rooms were finished out with drywall including the counter walls and the related insulation, only a minor part has been plastered and painted.

In addition, all the rooms have been finished with high quality materials such as acoustic ceiling, wall and floor tiles, vinyl and carpet flooring and baseboards.

Internal and External closures such as Fire Rated Doors, ordinary metal and wood doors, security doors, Aluminum and Metal windows, ATFP windows, metal grids, etc. and the related doors and windows hardware have been delivered and installed. Ordinary and ADA bathrooms have been designed and constructed.

The finishing includes metal works such as external metal stairs, handrails, beams, etc. The technological systems include Power and Illumination system, HVAC system, Plumbing system, Communication System, SCIF Area, Sprinkler and Fire Detection systems.

Minor external hardscape works were performed.
